Roulette
The French word roulette means a small wheel, which gives its name to one of the most recognisable and popular of all casino table games. Invented by the French some 400 years ago, the game currently exists in two major formats - American and European. These games are virtually identical, with the American version showing a double zero on the wheel against the European version of only one zero. This provides players with a slightly lower chance of winning on the American table.
It's rare to find an empty roulette table in a casino. Fun for spectator and player alike, the fascination of where the spinning ball will fall has kept fans coming back to this enticing game for centuries. The thrill of the game has been further enhanced by Hollywood movies and the plush casinos of the French Riviera, playgrounds of the rich and famous.
This simple game involves players placing their betting tokens across a roulette table showing all the various places where the little silver roulette ball can land. Players can bet on one number, winning 35 times their original stake if it comes in. Of course, the chances of that happening are 36:1, so it's pretty exciting when it happens!
With the initial bets placed, the dealer spins the roulette wheel and rolls the ball around the wheel rim. When the ball lands those players lucky enough to have called the fall take home their winnings. All other bets return to the casino.
